Experience the 5-hour programme

The learning team at Waitangi now offers teachers the opportunity to extend their class visit to our new 5 hour programme.
By collaborating with classroom teachers our educators (NZ trained teachers) can deliver a bespoke programme focussing not just on the history of Te Tiriti o Waitangi but delving deeper into the ‘Understand - Know - Do’ learning objectives of the Aotearoa New Zealand's History Curriculum. The extra time allows us to embed and integrate the learning that occurs here at Waitangi across the curriculum and into the classroom programme, creating a meaningful learning experience for ākonga.
A focus on Māori Art
Recently an Auckland school took advantage of this opportunity on a visit with year 6 students. These students were guided on a tour of the Grounds, Treaty House and through Te Kōngahu Museum of Waitangi. They learned about the history of the Treaty of Waitangi. They enjoyed a cultural performance in Te Whare Rūnanga and a visit to Ngātokimatawharoa. Throughout the experience they were able to observe how Māori used ngā toi to tell stories about themselves, their ancestors, places and events. Students learned about symbolism in Māori carvings and through careful observation and sketching were able to collect samples of their own for further development.
Back in our learning centre, students then developed their own motif, telling their story and incorporating some of the symbolism they had learnt. Students printed these using a foam printing technique onto card, thus creating a meaningful piece of art and a memento of their visit and their learning of the day.
Other Learning Opportunities
Resources at Waitangi include our digital learning lab where students can demonstrate their learning and grow their digital skills across a range of areas including VR, 3D printing, coding and Google tools. They can create projects which can be continued back in their own classroom. We also enjoy using the beautiful grounds to help students learn about the natural world from te ngahere and beyond.
At Waitangi Treaty Grounds our educators can create an across-curriculum experience for your ākonga, including but not limited to Te Tiriti o Waitangi.
