He ahurei te hanga o tēnā, o tēnā, me ngā whakairo e tohu ana i te tuakiri me te wairua o ia iwi.

He mea hanga i raro i ngā whakapainga o ngā Atua

Ngātokimatawhaorua was built to mark the centenary of the Treaty of Waitangi’s signing in 1940 and was built by members of New Zealand’s northern and Waikato iwi (tribes). The waka is launched every year in February as part of Waitangi Day commemorations.

I tere mai a Kupe, nāna a Aotearoa i toro, ki konei me te hoki atu mā runga i te waka hourua i kīia ko Matawhaorua. I muri i tōna hokinga atu ki Te Moananui-a-Kiwa atu i Aotearoa, i hahaungia anō te waka e tana mokopuna, e Nukutawhiti.

I tautapaina a Ngātokimatawhaorua he Kaipuke nō Tōna Tapairu Whakahirahira (arā, HMS), me te aha ka noho ā-ariā he wāhanga o te Taua Moana a te Karauna.
