The Education Experience is for ākonga from New Zealand schools, kura and Early Childhood services, wishing to visit the Waitangi Treaty Grounds.

We also offer programmes for other groups of tamariki and rangatahi from New Zealand and from overseas. Please get in touch for more information.

All programmes are specifically designed for the visiting group in close collaboration with their teacher.

Programmes for schools and kura are for up to five hours, which might include a visit to exhibitions in one or both museums, a visit to selected sites and buildings on the grounds, a cultural performance (*additional cost might apply) and a practical activity to support the learning (such as digital learning, art, craft and technology activities, or traditional games).

Programmes for our youngest learners run for two hours. Their visit to Waitangi might include a cultural performance in Te Whare Rūnanga, storytelling, a practical activity as well as a brief visit to one of our museum exhibitions.

All groups are required to book their visits in advance to ensure a member of the Learning Team is available to accompany them. Our programme is very popular and is often fully booked weeks in advance.

Under the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 we are required to ensure the health & safety of our visitors as well as our employees. We have identified several risks on-site and it is our duty to put controls in place to mitigate these risks. One of these controls is for our educators to lead every visit. If you have your own lesson plan for the visit our educator will still need to accompany you and therefore booking is essential.

Please note: This requirement includes all organisations with under 18’s, e.g., youth groups, sports teams etc.

To comply with the Health and Safety at Work Act 2015 we require you to bring an adult to child supervision ratio of 1:7 for Y1 – 8 and 1:10 for Y9 – 13. These adults are free of charge.

Waitangi Treaty Grounds does not receive ongoing operational funding from local or central government, and we rely on the admission fees of our visitors to keep up our world-class visitor experience.

We currently hold an Enriching Local Curriculum (ELC) contract with the Ministry of Education which subsidises the programme cost for visits from schools, kura and ECE settings. This allows us to keep the admission costs as low as possible.
